Why Is My Heat Pump Not Cooling on Hot Days?

A heat pump not cooling on hot days is usually due to restricted airflow or an incorrect refrigerant charge. The most common trigger is a dirty air filter or a blocked outdoor coil that chokes off heat release.

Other frequent causes include thermostat or control issues, a failing capacitor or fan, or a system that’s undersized for the peak load. In our Heathrow work, storm debris and pollen can mat the outdoor coil and quietly cut capacity before you notice warm air. A tech will measure refrigerant pressures, check electrical components, verify airflow, and confirm the thermostat sequence so the fix targets the root cause, not just the symptom.

Check these quick signals before a service call:

  • Replace a dirty filter and clear 2–3 feet around the outdoor unit
  • Set thermostat to Cool, fan on Auto, and lower the setpoint
  • Look for ice on copper lines or hear hissing (possible leak; stop and call)
  • Repeated breaker trips or a dead outdoor fan means service is needed now

If the unit is iced, turn it off at the thermostat to thaw before retrying, and book a diagnostic if cooling does not return.
